Course Information
If you only hold an ordinary car licence and are over 21 years of age, you will need to follow these procedures before starting a training course and test.
- Fill in a D2 licence application form
- Book in with a doctor for the D4 medical form to be completed (charges apply)
- Send both the completed forms with your car licence and any fee to the DVLA
- When your licence has been returned from the DVLA with the provisional entitlement for Category C added, then you must arrange the LGV theory test. This is a multiple choice paper of 35 questions and a hazard perception test. Fee is £21.00. (Results are issued after the test). You can apply yourself by ringing
0870 0101372. The recommended book to buy to study for the theory test is "The Official Theory Test for Drivers of Large Vehicles", and is available from bookshops (Please make sure that you obtain the current edition). Ask the office for details of using our CD Rom.
- When you have passed the theory test, contact us to arrange either a pre-course assessment or the training course and test
If you already hold a Category C or Class 2/3 licence:-
- Please note that in compliance with the new regulations, all existing car licence holders will have to pass Cat C (rigid) test before taking the Cat C & E (Artic) test.
| PRE-COURSE ASSESSMENT |
If you do not have experience of driving larger vehicles, it is recommended that you attend an assessment. Assessments need to be pre-booked and last approximately 1 hour. As you are taken out on a Large goods vehicle, the relevant provisional entitlement must be added to your car licence.
|
| COURSE DURATIONS |
Courses are usually held during the hours of 08.30 am to 4.30 pm
|
| INSTRUCTOR TRAINEE VEHCLE RATIO |
Our normal ratio for training is 2 trainees: 1 instructor: 1 vehicle for category C. If, however you have paid 2:1 rates and there is no other person on the course with you, we reserve the right to reduce the times of the training day, usually attendance is during the morning or afternoon session only. |
| BOOKING A COURSE |
To book a course please ring for course availability first. Provisional bookings are taken over the telephone, but we require this to be confirmed by sending a completed booking form together with a deposit within 7 working days. Any delay in sending in the form and deposit may result in the date being offered to another candidate. Deposits are non-refundable, unless at least 4 weeks notice is given. (This applies to cancelling a course date, or postponing a course to a later date). |
| DRIVING TESTS |
When we receive your booking form and deposit we allocate a test date with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). Once a test is booked, it requires a minimum of 10 clear working days notice (excluding weekends and Bank Holidays) to cancel, otherwise the fee will be lost. |
| GENERAL INFORMATION |
Once you have passed the Category C test, you will need to send your car licence and test pass certificate to the DVLA for the full entitlement to be added. Only when this has been returned can you take the Category C+E training and test. There is no waiting period in between, other than waiting for your licence to be returned from the DVLA and test availability.
If you have already passed the Category C (or class 2 or 3) test, you do not need to take the theory test. Your provisional for Category C+E will already be on your licence. |
